The Pete Burke Community Center (PBCC), located on Artillery Kaserne, is an award winning MWR managed facility. Housing the Garmisch Library and Outdoor Recreation, the Burke is a three time Army Recreation award-winning full service community activities center.
The PBCC is the garrison’s home for community special events, training, conferences and ethnic observances, Town Hall meetings and more. The center has been recognized as the best small-installation facility of its kind based on several factors. The staff at the Burke has implemented significant improvements, increased community special events, customer driven activities, renovation projects, and experimental programming. The PBCC began to make improvements in 2007-08 and is scheduled for a complete renovation in 2010 that will include a new kitchen and expanded areas for meetings of all sizes. The buildings ballroom, kitchen and conference room can be rented out for special events, training, or other purposes.
The Burke is also regarded as THE starting point for leisure travel in Garmisch. The Outdoor Recreation office is housed on the building’s first floor and the staff offers a wide range of rental items from skis to mountain bikes and years of experience in the area to help community members and visitors choose their own adventures. The Burke staff also offer various tours to local destinations and take community members on creative trips to a myriad of places. Check this site for an up to date tour schedule.
The Burke Center houses the Garmisch library- a five-time recipient of the best small garrison library award. In addition to a generous selection of books, DVDs, and tapes and internet services, the library features a comfortable setting with murals painted by community artists.
FMWR Outdoor Recreation operates the Kean’s Lodge which is located on Kramer Plateau overlooking Artillery Kaserne about a mile from the main gate. It’s an old bunkhouse nestled among the pines with extensive grounds and beautiful views. Kean’s Lodge is an inexpensive and ideal location for activities like retreats or off-sites, allowing groups an affordable alternative when visiting Garmisch. The lodge has a large common area with fireplace, full kitchen, German-style bunk beds and an outdoor patio and fire pits.
